Another clash of favourites will see Brazil the joint favourites for the tournament take on Colombia a team many fancied to go all the way before they suffered a shock defeat to Venezuela in their opening game of Group C. While Brazil impressed at times against Peru there was a lot of style and little substance, Neymar showed all his brilliance with flicks and nice touches throughout and finished the first goal with a terrific header but there was a little too much of the showboat and not enough of the team leader that Brazil need him to be. Instead Douglas Costa came up with a last minute winner for Brazil and they extended their winning streak to eleven. For me one of the key men for Brazil is going to be Chelsea midfielder Willian who's hard work and creativity are often over looked when the stats go down on paper. Brazil are going to have to improve defensively though where David Luiz looks like a liability most of the time and Thiago Silva spends the majority of the game covering his partners mistakes.
Colombia had a horrific opening game not only did they lose to minnows Venezuela but they were terrible for most of the game. With an array of attacking talent it was expected that Colombia would blow teams away. It didnt happen in the opening game though as Colombia failed to really create any chances, James Rodriguez was awful and has to shoulder a large portion of the blame for the game plan going array. Falcao looked the best option for the team but Bacca and Quadrado struggled to impose themselves at all and Jackson Martinez was on too late to really make any difference in the game. The problems lie in the formation which did not look balanced at all, this was something I highlighted prior to the Venezuela game but I did not think that Colombia would struggle this much. I think Pekerman will change to a 4-5-1 for the Brazil game and play a more defensive midfield to prevent Neymar getting space. This will be key for Colombia getting something from this game and I will be interested in seeing the line up for this as soon as it comes out.
I really want to take Colombia here but am put off by how terrible they were against Venezuela. Brazil for all their possession and domination against Peru gave up far too many chances and Colombia surely can not be as bad they were last time out. With Falcao , Martinez, Bacca and Rodriguez up front Colombia will be relishing the thoughts of taking on this error prone Brazil back line. For this reason I am going big on Colombia +1.
