Milan is set to host Lazio in a derby match of round 32 of Italian Serie A.
Milan is in a big slump at the moment and hasn’t won any of their last 4 matches and with that have endangered their chances in qualifying for Champions League next season. Milan is holding 4thplace in the standings with 52 points but Atalanta, Roma, Lazio, and Torino are breathing on their necks with only 3 points less. In their last game against Juventus, Milan was a better team with 53% ball possession, 4 shots on goal, 8 corner kicks and 85% of correct passes and after some questionable decisions from the referee Michael Fabbri, Milan has lost 2-1. Milan is playing good and attractive soccer and is creating a lot of chances but they struggle on the defensive end and are unable to keep the ball out of their net. An additional problem for Milan is that their starting goalkeeper Donnarumma is still listed as questionable and might not play in this very important match for Milan. Piatek is Milan’s top goal scorer with 8 goals in 11 matches while Suso added 5 goals and 8 assists. Paqueta, Conti, and Bonaventura are injured and will not be playing in this game. Coach Gattuso has done a great job with this Milan team and after years of not being in European competitions, Milan finally has a chance to qualify but for that to happen they need to get out of this slump and start playing better soccer on the defensive end. Last week coach Gattuso announced that he will be leaving Milan’s bench on the end of the season and for that reason I’m sure he wants to end this season on a positive note.
Lazio has been hot and cold throughout the season but despite that, they are only 2 points away from Champions League spot. In their last game against Sassuolo, Lazio was by far the better team with 58% ball possession, 7 shots on goal, 11 corner kicks and 84% of correct passes and was able to score 2 goals but was struggling on the defensive end and game ended in a 2-2 draw. Lazio’s strongest part is their midfield which is led by Milinkovic-Savic, Badelj and their captain Senad Lulic. Ciro Immobile is Lazio’s top goal scorer with 14 goals while Correa added 5 assists. Berisha and Lukaku are injured while Badelj is suspended because of yellow cards. Lazio’s game style is focused on controlling the midfield and fast distribution of the ball to the attacking part of the field and players are finally reacting good to coach’s Inzaghi ideas. After a terrible start of the season, Lazio is finally showing a piece of their potential and competing for one of the top 5 positions where they rightfully belong. Lazio’s away record is 6 wins, 3 draws, 6 losses with 15 scored and 15 conceded goals and that is something coach Inzaghi will need to improve in these last 5 games if Lazio wants to stay in the race for Champions League.
When playing at home, Milan hasn’t lost any of their last 4 games against Lazio and because I think that Milan is a better team with better game style than Lazio, I’m giving the edge to Milan to bounce back from this negative streak
