Colombia vs. Argentina

Fonte Nova Arena
In the 2019 Copa America, Argentina and Colombia will play each other in the opening round. The match between Argentina and Colombia is set to be played at the Fonte Nova Arena in Salvador.
Argentina warmed-up against Nicaragua in a match which they won 5-1. It was a dominant display by the Argentine side as Leo Messi and Lautaro Martinez both scored 2 goals each. Argentina controlled 68% of the possession and has 20 shots. The Argentine team also completed 800 passes at an accuracy of 89%. It was an impressive win and the Argentine team will be confident following that performance. This team will be heavily reliant on Leo Messi as the entire team is expected to play through the FC Barcelona forward. The attacking talent in this side is exceptional as Messi will be supported by the likes of Sergio Aguero, Angel Di Maria, and Paulo Dybala. This will be a much tougher match than the warm-up fixture and it will be important for Argentina to sort out their defense. The likes of Otamendi and Foyth have failed for Argentina in the past but they must improve for this tournament if Argentina are to compete.
Colombia, on the other side of the field, defeated Peru 3-0 in a warm-up match. Colombia also defeated Panama 3-0 earlier in the month. 5 years from Colombia’s impressive 2014 World Cup, the team has aged and it seems like the top players are not at the same level. James Rodriguez had a poor season at Bayern Munich while Radamel Falcao is a shadow of the player who startled at Atletico Madrid. Colombia have match-winners in James and Falcao but I don’t see this team competing at the level they did in 2014.
Colombia and Argentina last played in 2016. Argentina won that match 3-0 with Messi and Di Maria both scoring.
Neither Colombia nor Argentina look in top shape but both teams will feel that they have the ability to compete for the Copa America title. As far as this fixture is concerned, I am going to pick Argentina to win. Argentina have Messi and that is often enough to determine the result. Messi aside, Argentina have a better balance when compared to Colombia. The big Colombian players look in poor touch after poor seasons and I see the team losing their first match.
