Estádio Governador Magalhães Pinto
Belo Horizonte, Brazil
In the 2019 Copa America, Argentina will play against Paraguay at the Estádio Governador Magalhães Pinto in Belo Horizonte.
Argentina had a poor opening round match where they were defeated 2-0 by Colombia. The Argentinian defense was very poor as they allowed the Colombian strikers too many scoring chances. In addition to that, Argentina lacked the ability to finish their chances. Argentina took 13 shots but failed to score which is very concerning. Leo Messi was particularly poor for Argentina as the FC Barcelona superstar was invisible for much for the match. Without Messi playing well, this Argentina team lacks creativity and that was evident during the defeat. The result against Colombia means that Argentina must win this match so the pressure will be on the players to perform in this match.
On the other side of the coin, Paraguay played a 2-2 draw against Qatar in their previous outing. A draw was a just result for Paraguay but the team will be disappointed since they allowed a 2 goal lead to slip away. Paraguay took the lead in the 4th minute via a penalty and doubled their advantage in the 56th minute via Derlis Gonzalez. Unfortunately for Paraguay, the team didn’t have the ability to withstand the pressure applied by Qatar as they conceded 2 goals in the final 25 minutes of the game. This will be a much tougher match for Paraguay since they are playing a very talented team in Argentina. Despite Argentina’s current form, Paraguay must be at their best if they wish to compete.
Argentina and Paraguay have played each other 15 times in the past. Argentina has won on 5 occasions, Paraguay has won on 3 occasions and 7 games finished level. The most recent match between these two teams was in 2016 where Paraguay won 1-0.
Despite Argentina’s performance against Colombia, I am still picking them to win this match. Paraguay didn’t look convincing during their draw against Qatar and I don’t see them having enough talent to challenge the likes of Sergio Aguero and Leo Messi. It is rare to see Messi fail twice in a row so I expect the superstar forward to be back to his best in this match. Argentina have a stronger team and I see them getting their first points on the board.
