The Line: Madrid +200 / Arsenal +125 / Draw +230 -- Over/Under: 2.5
Atletico Madrid and Arsenal meet Thursday in the soccer International Champions Cup at the Singapore National Stadium.
Atletico Madrid has produced a positive result in eight of its last nine matches and is coming off a 3-2 win over Nigeria. Atletico Madrid has scored at least two goals in each of its last three matches and has seen a positive result in 11 straight matches when finding the back of the net at least once. Atletico Madrid has come a long way the past few years and should look to build on its runner-up finish in La Liga last season. In fact, Rodrigo Hernandez recently said the Mattress Makers are the best squad in La Liga and should have dreams of winning everything. Confidence is clearly on another level right now for Atletico Madrid, so while it’s just preseason, this is a team that should be out to prove a point against some other respectable sides. This match especially will go a long way to helping Atletico Madrid back up those statements from the young 22-year-old.
Arsenal enters this tournament splitting its last six matches but is coming off an 8-0 domination over Boreham Wood. Arsenal simply dominated its most recent match by controlling the ball for 76 percent, getting 10 shots on goal and watching Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang score a hat trick within the first 17 minutes. There were six players overall who found the back of the net for Arsenal, and this club has now scored a combined 15 goals in its last four matches. The recent results haven’t exactly been there for the Gunners, and last years efforts in the Premier League were a bit disappointing. However, Arsenal has shown in its last few matches what its capable of when it plays with offensive pressure and looks to be aggressive from the start. These three matches in the International Champions Cup could go a long way for Arsenal once league play begins.
These teams met twice earlier this year in the UEFA Europa League, Atletico Madrid won the most recent match in May 1-0 and the match in April was a 1-1 draw.
The last two meetings between these clubs were low scoring, but Arsenal and its recent offensive explosions lead me to believe this game could be a bit different. While the competition wasn’t great, scoring eight goals is nothing to sneeze at, and lets not forget it lit up Burnley with five goals a few matches before that. We could be in for some offensive fireworks for a change.
I like the over.
