The Line: -- Over/Under:
Cagliari and Atletico Madrid meet Wednesday in a friendly soccer match at the Sardegna Arena.
Cagliari are coming off a 0-0 draw against Trabzonspor and have produced a positive result in six of its last seven matches. Cagliari has shown to be very polished defensively during this stretch, allowing one or less goals in seven of its last eight matches and producing five clean sheets in its last seven matches. This defensive pressure should give Cagliari some much needed confidence after finishing 16th in Serie A last year and with the upcoming season about a week away. You would however like to see some better execution on the offensive side, as matches for Cagliari haven’t been the easiest watches if we’re being honest. Finding some balance before the season begins will be key for Cagliari to improve in the standings this season.
Atletico Madrid is coming off a 1-1 draw against Stuttgart, as Joaquin Munoz quickly responded with a goal in the 60th minute to force the tie. Atletico Madrid was the much more physical team and got three shots on goal out of 11 chances overall. Atletico Madrid has now produced a positive result in eight of its last 10 matches and has just two matches left before its big meeting against Real Madrid in the Super Cup Final. Atletico Madrid seems to be on cruise control at the moment, as its comfortable allowing its opponent to dominate ball possession and even get off more shot attempts in most matches. When it needs to be aggressive and flip that switch, Atletico Madrid has been able to do just enough to force the positive result and move on. This squad is pacing itself well at the moment.
There’s no previous matches between these two clubs.
Both of these clubs have been very solid defensively in their last few matches and Atletico Madrid has been a bit passive, comfortably giving away a good percentage of ball possession. The difference is Cagliari isn’t comfortable and doesn’t have the playmakers to take advantage of those opportunities. Atletico Madrid should get some decent looks at counters and will have chances to open this game up for once.
I’ll back Atletico Madrid to get the victory.
