Atletico Madrid is welcoming Sevilla in round 37 of Spanish LaLiga.
Atletico Madrid is a solid team who focuses on strong defense and fast counter attacks through their best player Antoine Griezmann. In their last game against Espanyol, Atletico was terrible with 51% of ball possession, but only 3 shots on goal and 85% of correct passes and has lost this game 3-0. Throughout the season, Atletico was the best defensive team in Spain with only 26 conceded goals, but Atletico’s problem is their offensive inefficiency and lack of offensive creativity. Atletico is in second place in LaLiga standings with 74 points, 6 points in front of Real Madrid. Griezmann is Atletico’s top goal scorer with 15 goals and 8 assists. Hernandez, Gimenez, Savic, and Perez are all injured while Costa is suspended due to a red card. Atletico is safe in second place as long as they win at least 1 point in this last 2 LaLiga games and will now turn to look for players to add to their roster because Hernandez and Godin have already signed with other clubs while rumors of Griezman, Oblak, and Niguez leaving are getting louder and louder. Only good thing for Atletico is that their current coach Diego Simeone has signed a new contract and will stay on the bench.
Sevilla has had a decent season and are now on the 6th place in the standings with 55 points and still has a chance to end up in a Champions League spot. Sevilla’s biggest problem this season was their inconsistent defense and has conceded 46 goals in 36 matches. In their last game against Leganes, Sevilla has had 64% of ball possession, but only 3 shots on goal, 3 corner kicks and only 80% of correct passes and has lost this match 0-3. Ben Yedder is Sevilla’s top goal scorer with 17 goals, followed by Sarabia with 11 goals. Wober, Silva, Banega, and Carrico are injured and will not be in the lineup. When playing in good form, Sevilla is one of the best teams in Spain, but that was rarely the case this season despite having some young stars like Ben Yedder, Silva, Rog, and Promes on the team. It is still unclear if coach Caparros will remain on the bench because if Sevilla wants to be more competitive in LaLiga with Barcelona, Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid they will need a coach with a vision and talents to keep this Sevilla’s players in line and get the best out of them.
Trends between these two teams are mixed and at least 6 goals have been scored in last 6 matches between Atletico and Sevilla. Atletico is better team defensively and is playing in solid form, but Sevilla has great offensive potential and I see them taking at least 1 point here and to stay in the fight for Champions League spot.
