VfB Stuttgart and Atletico Madrid meet Sunday in a friendly soccer match at Mercedes-Benz Arena.
VfB Stuttgart is coming off a 3-1 victory over Basaksehir in which Pablo Maffeo, Berkay Ozcan and Chadrac Akolo all found the back of the net. VfB Stuttgart allowed a late goal i the second half when the match was all but decided with a three goal cushion. VfB Stuttgart has now produced a positive result in each of its last seven matches and has found quite the confidence on the offensive side. VfB Stuttgart has produced VfB Stuttgart has produced two or more goals in nine of its last 10 matches and has found the back of the net five times in its last two matches. Sure, you can laugh at the competition level all you’d like, and this match will certainly be a stiffer test, but the Reds are playing some highly effective and fun to watch soccer at the moment. This is as consistent and dominant as VfB Stuttgart has looked in quite some time.
Atletico Madrid is coming off a 2-3 loss to PSG in a game that was an offensive shootout. Victor Mollejo and Antoine Bernede both found the back of the net for the Mattress Makers and there were a combined 36 shot attempts with 16 of them being on goal. Atletico Madrid has now been on the losing side in just two of its last 11 matches and has also found a great deal of offensive success with two or more goals scored in each of its last five contests. You’d like to see the defensive effort pick up a bit, as Atletico Madrid has allowed a combined 14 shots on goal in its last two contests, but overall this team has found its rhythm on the other side of the pitch and seems fine with trading shot attempts. With three matches left before the Super Cup Final, Atletico Madrid should slowly start preparing for a more balanced approach.
There’s no previous matches between these two sides.
Atletico Madrid is obviously the better side, but this is also a team that’s been giving up a ton of shots on goal recently, and VfB Stuttgart has been a scoring machine. This is also one of the bigger home matches for VfB Stuttgart, so you can expect a motivated team and a jacked up stadium. I like for VfB Stuttgart to be aggressive and give itself a shot at a victory. Atletico Madrid seems to be more focused on staying healthy, giving younger players a look and getting ready for the Super Cup Final.
I’ll take VfB Stuttgart to win this match.
