Australia and Peru meet Tuesday in World Cup soccer action at Fisht Olympic Stadium.

Australia was able to keep itself alive in the group by forcing a 1-1 draw against Denmark, but the result makes this a must-win match if there’s any chance to advance. Australia has mangled to score in both matches this tournament and has scored at least once in six of its last seven matches overall. The issue for the Socceroos overall is that there’s not enough top tier offensive firepower to really scare teams in this tournament and makes this club feel like its always fighting uphill. Australia did have some quality strikes against Denmark late in the second half, but nobody could close the deal and steal the needed three points. It’s been a somewhat frustrating tournament for the Aussies to this point. Still, Australia gives itself a chance with a victory to make the knockout stages of the World Cup for the first time since 2006.

Peru has lost both World Cup matches 0-1 and has been eliminated in hopes of making the knockout stages. Peru has now lost six of its last eight World Cup matches and has failed to score in each of its last three matches overall. In its recent loss to France, Peru actually controlled possession for 57 percent of the match and got 10 shots off while being the more physical team. The White and Red played a decent match and good enough to earn at least a point, but there wasn’t a difference maker on this club that could close the deal. It’s now a matter of pride and finding that motivation to at least go back with a World Cup victory. Of course, Peru hasn’t won a World Cup match since its 4-1 victory over Iran back in 1978. So, while there’s zero chance of making the round of 16, there is still something Peru can play for in terms of snapping such a long drought.

There’s no previous meetings between these two sides.

We’re getting a solid price for an Australia club that has to win this match to have any chance of advancing to the knockout stages. However, I expect Peru to give a solid showing as well in hopes of winning its first World Cup match in ages. This is a prideful bunch that shouldn’t bow out of the tournament without a fight. The one constant between these clubs is that offense has been like pulling teeth. Australia doesn’t have many difference makers and scoring is never easy, while Peru has gone three straight matches without a goal.

Give me the under.
