Barcelona enjoyed a good domestic season at Camp Nou winning back the La Liga title, however, their demise in Europe did not go unnoticed and it seems that they are on the lookout for new defenders.
It is almost certain that we have seen the best days of Carles Puyol, the rock at the back of the Catalan defence for so many years, but father time catches up on us all eventually and Puyol is no different. He has also endured a number of niggling injuries in the last couple of years which has curtailed his appearances and forced the Barcelona management to make unwanted changes at the back. At the same time, we also saw a dip in form from Gerard Pique which also caused some consternation for the coaches.
In view of this, Barca tried to prise David Luiz away from Chelsea with a number of approaches during the summer, all of which were rejected by the club, but moreover by the player as well. The Brazilian international recently revealed it was a personal choice to turn down the Nou Camp's offer, but it looks likely the Blues will be tested again in the winter transfer window. The President of the La Liga champs Sandro Rosell, has admitted the club will re-evaluate a bid for Luiz in January adding the 26-year-old's fee and wages were also a factor in the breakdown of the deal.
As an alternative, Barcelona also tried to capture Daniel Agger from Liverpool. The reliable defender seems to have got into difficulties with new Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers, a stubborn man at the best of times, and it looked like he was destined for the door. However, there seems to have been a change of heart from the Liverpool boss and Agger has been back in the team at the start of the new Premier League season.
That will not deter Barcelona, and if they fail in their attempts to sign Luiz from Chelsea in January, they will turn their attention to Daniel Agger at Liverpool. Moreover, a deal for Agger would be a lot less expensive and may appeal to a club which had to shell out £40m ($63m) for Neymar in the summer.
