Bayern is hosting Mainz in round 3 of German Bundesliga.
Bayern has opened this season with an undeserved draw against Hertha at home but has shown us a shadow of their power in last weeks match against Schalke. Bayern was a bit sloppy in this match against Schalke which is understandable considering its the beginning of the season, but Bayern was also dominant with 67% of ball possession, 6 shots on goal, and 88% of correct passes and has won this match 0-3 with 3 goals from one of the best strikers in last decade, Robert Lewandowski. Coutinho and Perisic, who are the latest signing for Bayern had their debut and were solid in those 35 minutes they got to play. Bayern has great team, and will once again compete with Borussia Dortmund for Bundesliga title, but to compete in Champions League, Bayern will need to work on defensive consistency and those small mistakes they make in the middle of the field like losing possession or making an unforced bad pass. Niko Kovac was under a lot of pressure last season because Bayern was falling behind Borussia for most of the season, but in the end, Bayern managed to win not only Bundesliga but also DFB Pokal cup competition. Kovac is a good, young coach who still has a lot to learn but he is a good fit in this Bayern team and is enjoying full support from both management and players. Goretzak, Thiago and Arp are injured and will not be playing in this match. Bayern has enough depth to cover any position in case of an injury or suspension and by the time Champions League starts, Bayern will be in top form.
Mainz has had a terrible start of the season and is one of those teams that will struggle from the beginning of the season until the end and will fight to stay outside the relegation zone. In first two games of the season, Mainz has conceded 6 goals while scoring only 1 goal. In their last game against Borussia M'gladbach, Mainz was hanging in there with 47% of ball possession, 4 shots on goal, and solid 79% of correct passes, but than Mainz have conceded 2 goals in 3 minutes and lost the game 1-3 at home. Mainz has few really good young players like Mateta, Kunde, and Caricol but that is simply not enough to stay competitive in Bundesliga. Sandro Schwarz was signed as Mainz's head coach back in July of 2017. and has managed to keep Mainz in Bundesliga since then, but when most of the teams were pretty active on the market, Mainz hasn't done much and that could cost them in the long run. Dong-won Ji, Bell, Mateta, and Juste are all injured and will not be in the lineup for this match. Mainz is a team that doesn't have a specific game style, mostly because they don't have the quality to play the game they would want to play and Mainz will be forced to defend against most of the opponents in Bundesliga.
I won't even take a look at head to head matches between Bayern and Mainz. Form, squad depth, and quality are all on Bayern's side and Bayern is playing at home, so for that reason, I will pick something on halftime to reduce the price.
