We have some international friendly soccer action on tap on Wednesday as a pair of World Cup hopefuls go head-to-head when Egypt take on Belgium from the King Baudouin Stadium.
Egypt will be in dire need of a change of fortunes after going winless in their last 5 matches, their most recent being a scoreless draw with Colombia in their last outing. The Egyptians were outmatched from the get go, retaining just 31% of possession and being outshot 17-6, and 9-1 in shots on target. This will be Egypt’s last tune-up match before opening the tournament with a game against Uruguay on June 15th.
Belgium on the other hand will be looking to extend their current unbeaten run with sits at 17 games following a scoreless draw of their own against the defending European champion, Portugal on Saturday in a potential future knockout round fixture in Russia. The possession was split right down the middle 50/50, with Portugal outshooting the Belgians 13-10 with each side logging 3 shots on target.
There aren’t really any head-to-head trends of note as these two teams have only met twice, with the last meeting coming in 2005.
Egypt holding Colombia to a scoreless draw in their last outing is definitely a moral victory for the Egyptians, who will want to put forth a strong effort with this being their last tune-up game before the Big Dance. However, Belgium have been on a roll since qualifying, and I can’t see anything but a Belgium victory being the outcome at full time so that’s where I’m leaning in this one.
