The 2018 FIFA World Cup third place game comes to us from Saint Petersburg Stadium in a group G rematch as Belgium takes on England on Saturday.
Belgium comes into this match looking for their best finish at a World Cup in the national side’s history despite being edged out by France 1-0 in the semifinals on Tuesday. The match was a scoreless draw until Samuel Umtiti gave Les Bleus the lead in the 51st minute and that was all France would need as they were able to ride that goal out until the final whistle. Belgium owned 60% possession from the match, most of it coming after France scored the lone goal in the match. France outshot Belgium in the end 19-9, and 5-3 in regards to shots on target.
England comes into this match looking to finish strong after a heartbreaking 2-1 loss in extra time to Croatia on Wednesday. Kieran Trippier struck a gorgeous free kick into the top corner, giving England the lead just five minutes in. England would sit back and try to hold onto the one goal lead but it would vanish in the 68th minute thanks to Ivan Perisic. Extra time looked like it wasn’t going to solve anything until Mario Mandzukic broke English hearts in the 4th minute of the second half of extra time. England were out possessed 54%-46%, and outshot 22-11 and 7-1 in terms of shots on target.
The most recent head-to-head matchup between the two sides came in the group stage of this year’s tournament as previously mentioned, with Belgium logging a 1-0 victory.
Betting a third place game is hard because you wonder how many guys are actually going to want it after coming so close to reaching the final. However, Belgium as previously mentioned will be pushing for history as no national side has placed 3rd at a World Cup, while I feel that England still has lots to prove, the all too familiar heartbreak for English fans and the team alike will linger for a while and will carry over into this game. All in all, I just see Belgium wanting this game more, so I’ll side with the Red Devils to pick up the victory over an emotionally drained England side.
