Belgium and Tunisia meet Saturday in World Cup soccer action at Otkrytie Arena.
Belgium is coming off one of the better World Cup opening showings with a 3-0 victory over Panama. In the victory, Belgium controlled the ball for 60 percent of the match, got 15 shots off and six of them were on goal. Dries Mertens drew first blood about midway threw the match and then Romelu Lukaku found the back of the net twice. It was an overall dominating performance from the Red Devils and one that should give this club even more confidence as we get deeper into the tournament. Belgium has the firepower to hang with any team in the field and build on its quarterfinal appearance in 2014. With the way it looked in its first match, this is a club few want to see at the moment.
Tunisia is coming off a heartbreaking 2-1 loss to England when it looked like it was going to leave the match with at least one point. Ferjani Sassi tied the match early on a penalty kick and it stayed that way until Harry Kane scored in extra time to give England the three points. It has to feel good for Tunisia that it knows it can compete with a quality club for a full match and end up with a positive result. However, there’s no moral victories in this tournament and that was a loss that could be impossible to bounce back from. Tunisia is in the World Cup for the first time in 12 years and has never made it out of the group stages. A positive result would have been massive for this teams confidence and the way people view this team overall. That loss could linger and result in an even shorter tournament for Eagles of Carthage.
There’s no previous meetings between these two sides.
I can’t put any stock into Tunisia after how it lost its opening match, as its a result that won’t be easy to force a rebound. We could see some guys check out or short on confidence. Belgium was a team I was looking at to win the tournament, and it did nothing in its opening match to get me off that bandwagon. Belgium is loaded offensively and is deadly when it looks to attack and is forcing the issue. We should see Belgium get a lot of quality looks and have chances to open this game up.
Give me the over.
