CD Mirandes vs. CF Villarreal - 2/5/20 Copa del Rey Pick, Odds & Prediction
CF Villarreal at CD Mirandes
Wednesday, February 5, 2020 at 3:00 PM (Estadio Municipal de Anduva)
Second-tier outfit Mirandes host La Liga side Villarreal at Estadio Municipal de Anduva on Wednesday night for a crucial Copa del Rey quarter-final clash. Can the home side upset the odds?
Mirandes’ Copa del Rey games have been full of goals this season. They kicked off their campaign with a 5-4 victory over Coruxo before overcoming UCAM Murcia 3-2 in the second round. Mirandes then claimed back-to-back victories over La Liga opposition to book their place in the last eight. First up, they saw off Celta Vigo in the Round of 32 before claiming an impressive 3-1 win over Sevilla in the previous round.
However, the club’s eye-catching cup run has undoubtedly had a negative impact on their league form. Mirandes have slipped to eleventh in the Segunda Division table following a run of four straight draws. Still, Mirandes have lost just six of their 25 league games this term – a record bettered only by three teams in the division.
Villarreal have enjoyed a favorable run to the quarter-finals and are yet to face top-flight team in the competition. After hammering Comillas 5-0, Javier Calleja’s side beat Orihuela 2-1 in the second round. Villarreal then cruised past Girona with a 3-0 victory before beating Rayo Vallecano 2-0 in the Round of 16.
Villarreal are on a remarkable run which has seen them win nine of their previous games in all competitions. A run of five wins in their last six league games has propelled the team up to seventh in the La Liga table and they come into this game on the back of a 3-1 victory over Osasuna. Additionally, it’s worth mentioning that only Real Madrid and Barcelona have scored more league goals than Villarreal this season.
Prediction and Pick
Mirandes are likely to put up a fight but I’m backing Villarreal to win this game. The second-tier side have done well to reach this stage of the competition but their league form has been questionable in recent weeks. By contrast, Villarreal have been scoring goals for fun of late and I think they will extend their winning streak on Wednesday.
