The Chicago Fire and New York City FC open their season Sunday at the Toyota Park.
The Chicago Fire have won just 14 games the last two seasons and haven’t made the playoffs since 2012. The Chicago Fire are obviously hoping this season will be different as patience with the fan base is starting to run thin. David Accam returns after leading Chicago with 10 goals, Michael Stephens had four assists and Kennedy Igboananike had 66 shots. Defensively, Sean Johnson returns at goalkeeper after leading Chicago with four shutouts and 59 saves. The Chicago Fire allowed a ridiculous 58 goals in 34 games, a big reason for all their losses. The Chicago Fire have split their last six regular season home games.
The New York City FC look to take that next step after a 10-17-7 record in their first season in the MLS. The fans of New York City have to be excited given that there’s some solid talent on this year’s squad. David Villa returns after leading New York with 18 goals, Kwadwo Poku had seven assists and Patrick Mullins had 38 shots. Defensively, Josh Saunders returns as goalkeeper after leading New York with four shutouts and 123 saves. The New York City FC also struggled on the defensive end last year, allowing 58 goals in 34 matches. The New York City FC have lost four of their last five regular season road games.
Chicago Fire won the first meeting against New York City FC, and the most recent match in May resulted in a 2-2 draw. The two matches combined for five goals.
Both of these clubs were flat out awful on the defensive end last season, so the over will be worth a look once the line is released. In terms of a side, I’m picking a draw. It’s just too tough to pick a team to win when both allow goals at a high percentage.
