The Colorado Rapids and San Jose Earthquakes play Friday night at Avaya Stadium.
The Colorado Rapids look for three more points after winning three of their last five matches. The Colorado Rapids are a defensive team that’s allowed 24 goals in 22 matches and has pitched seven shutouts. Clint Irwin has come away with 64 saves and has allowed five goals in his last three matches. Offensively, the Colorado Rapids have scored just 20 goals overall and have scored three goals in their last three matches. Gabriel Torres leads Colorado with four goals, Dillon Powers has five assists and Luis Solignac has 10 shots on goal. The Colorado Rapids could use some better results on the road, as they’re just 1-3-1 in their last five road matches, but are coming off a win over Seattle.
The San Jose Earthquakes could also use a win after losing five of their last six matches. The San Jose Earthquakes have scored 23 goals in 22 matches overall and four goals in their last three matches. Chris Wondolowski leads San Jose with nine goals, Matias Perez Garcia has six assists and Shea Salinas has 21 shots. Defensively, the San Jose Earthquakes have pitched six shutouts and allowed two or more goals in eight matches. David Bingham has come away with 78 saves and has allowed five goals in his last three starts. The San Jose Earthquakes have been solid at home as of late, and they’re 2-1-2 in their last five matches in front of their home fans.
The last four matches between these two teams have produced a draw, including their most recent matchup in May. The last time this matchup produced a winner was in 2013 when San Jose won, 1-0. The last five matchups have produced no more than two goals.
This is an interesting matchup between two of the worst teams in the West. It's a complete toss-up. However, San Jose has been solid on its home field and has to have the advantage here. Give me the Earthquakes in a much needed victory.
