We have some MLS action on Saturday from MAPFRE Stadium as Columbus Crew play host to Real Salt Lake.
Columbus Crew come into this one looking for something positive after going winless in their last five matches, following up three draws with back-to-back 2-0 losses, including a setback at the hands of LAFC last time out. Columbus found themselves down 2-0 just 8 minutes into the match thanks to 2 goals in 4 minutes from Laurent Ciman and Adam Diomande and that’s all LAFC would need to take all three points from the Crew at the final whistle. Possession was fairly even with Columbus maintaining 48% possession, while being outshot 16-10 and 5-1 in regards to shots on target. Gyafi Zardes leads Columbus with 10 goals this season while Federico Higuain is the Crew’s leading assist man with 5 assists this season.
Real Salt Lake will be looking to snap a three game winless run of their own, putting out a 1-1 draw with San Jose last time out. The match was a scoreless stalemate at the half, before Damir Kreilach gave RSL the lead 9 minutes into the second half. The lead didn’t last long however, as San Jose tied the game just 10 minutes after that, leading to the full time draw. Salt Lake dominated the match statistically, holding onto 64% possession while outshooting Salt Lake 27-15 and 8-4 in terms of shots on target. Corey Baird leads Salt Lake with 4 goals this season while Albert Rusnak leads RSL with 3 assists this season.
Four of the last five meetings between these two teams have ended in draws, while the road team has not won since 2011.
Neither side is on a great run of form lately, so trying to pick a side may be pointless. However, a common theme on both sides and in the head-to-head tie is the draw so a draw is where I will side in this match on Saturday. Braver punters may also want to try chasing the final score line of 0-0 and 1-1 respectively as I don’t see this one being a very entertaining affair.
