We have some World Cup action on the final matchday of Group E as Switzerland takes on Costa Rica from the Nizhny Novgorod Stadium on Wednesday.
Switzerland comes into this match tied with Brazil on 4 points after two matches, but currently sit in 2nd spot thanks to goal differential. Switzerland following up their huge draw with Brazil by picking up a crucial three points in a 2-1 win over Serbia in their last outing. Aleksandar Mitrovic gave Serbia the lead just 5 minutes into the match and it stayed that way until the 52nd minute when Granit Xhaka equalized for the Swiss. We looked destined to finish at a 1-1 stalemate before Xherdan Shaqiri broke the Serbian back line and slotted home what would end up being the winner for Switzerland. The Swiss out possessed Serbia, 58%-42% and outshot Serbia 20-12 and 5-3 in terms of shots on target.
Costa Rica on the other hand will be headed home after this match and will be playing their last game simply for pride after being eliminated from World Cup contention following a 2nd straight loss, coming in the form of a 2-0 loss to Brazil in their last outing. Costa Rica weathered a Brazil onslaught and looked destined for a scoreless draw and possibly their first point of the tournament. However, Philippe Coutinho had other ideas, slotting home the game winner in the first minute of second half stoppage time before Neymar added an insurance marker in the seventh minute after the 90. Costa Rica was out possessed 66%-34%, and outshot 23-4 and 9-0 in regards to shots on target.
These two sides have only met twice and not since 2010, with the last match ending in a 1-0 Costa Rican victory.
Costa Rica having nothing to lose in this match makes them a dangerous side, however the severity of the situation is not lost on Switzerland. It’s still possible that the Swiss can be eliminated from the tournament with a loss and a Serbia win based on goal differential. A Serbia/Brazil draw could also knock Switzerland out if Costa Rica does some serious damage on the scoreboard. With that said, I think Switzerland knows what has to be done and I believe the Swiss come out and take care of business and send Costa Rica home pointless from the 2018 World Cup.
