The domestic cup games are coming think and fast in France at the moment, giving us more opportunities to take advantage of the bookies. The Ligue 1 sides are all expected to get the better of their lower-league opponents. But could we see a classic cup upset?
Let’s check out the best bets for the Round of 16 Coupe de France ties.
Angers vs. Rennes – 1/28/20
After a tricky start to the season, Angers have started to pick up some decent results in the recent weeks. Stephane Moulin’s side are unbeaten in their last six games in all competitions and come into this tie on the back of an impressive draw away at Marseille. Still, Angers remain seven points behind Rennes in the Ligue 1 standings. Rennes are currently third. But after losing to Marseille earlier in the month, a 1-1 draw with Nice last time out has seen the club lose ground of the top two. There isn’t much to separate these two teams right now, so I'm backing Angers to claim the win. Both managers are likely to field weakened sides, so Angers’ home advantage could give them the edge.
Pick: Angers to Win – 2.40
Belfort vs. Montpellier – 1/29/20
I think this matchup could spring a surprise. Belfort play in the Championnat National 2 – the fourth-tier of French soccer. However, Belfort have claimed some eye-catching results in this competition this season and have lost just one of their previous six games in all competitions. Ligue 1 side Montpellier are obviously the favorites here, but I think Belfort’s home advantage will be a massive factor in this tie. I don’t recommend placing a huge wager on this, but it’s definitely worth a little punt. There are bound to be a couple of teams that upset the odds in the Round of 16, and Belfort could well be one of them.
Pick: Belfort to Win – 9.50
Nice vs. Lyon – 1/30/20
Nice host Lyon in one of four all-Ligue 1 ties in the Round of 16. Both sides have endured inconsistent seasons so far and neither club has been able to climb out of mid-table in the French top-flight. Nice have managed to win just one of their last four league games and have only scored more than one goal in one of those games. By contrast, Lyon have been scoring goals for fun lately. It’s also worth mentioning that Lyon’s defensive record this season is far superior to that of Nice’s, so I can see the away side progressing into the quarter-finals with a win here.
Pick: Lyon to Win – 1.91
