Huge game for the FAI Champions Dundalk as they take on BATE at Oriel Park on Wednesday night. Dundalk were excellent in Belarus last week and really gifted Bate the win in a tight game. Stephen Kenny will have his team focused on getting a result on Wednesday night a 1-0 win would be enough to secure a place in the next round of the Champions League qualifiers but a goal by Bate completely changes the complexion of this tightly balanced tie. Up front Dundalk have to look to McMillan and Towel although Towel is technically a midfielder he is top scorer for Dundalk with thirteen goals and Dundalk know that they must work extremely hard on Wednesday against a better balance and more experienced BATE team.
BATE have big league experience and have been in this position way more than the Irish side. With a talented squad that has qualified for the Champions League proper in three of the last four seasons this is a team that knowswhat to do in this position. Rodoniev is the main man up front but will be ably assisted by Karnitskiy who managed to find the net in the first leg of the tie in Belarus. This is a talented squad but they have had a relatively great start to the season and are eight points clear of second places Dinamo Minsk.
This one has all the markings of an upset. a Talented Dundalk team with a point to prove and the ability to take their chances, there is no doubt that BATE have the more experience but at 2/1 at home I think Dundalk are a super bet to win this game. The League of Ireland is improving year on year and Dundalk are the kingpins there right now. It is only a matter of time before an Irish side makes the break through into the Champions League propoer, Dundalk have a better than 50% chance of doing just that on Wednesday night.
