Elina Svitolina vs Sofia Kenin - 3/8/19 WTA Tour - Indian Wells Open Pick, Odds, and Prediction

Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports

Ukrainian tennis superstar, Elina Svitolina, will begin her 2019 WTA Indian Wells Open campaign in the second round where she will face Sofia Kenin from the United States.

Sofia Kenin won her opening round match in 3 sets. It would have been a very satisfying win for Kenin as she beat Wang Yafan who beat her very recently in the final of the WTA Mexican Open. During the win, Kenin impressed with her receiving as she won 44% of her return points which allowed her to break her opponent’s serve on 5 occasions. It is important to note that Kenin struggled with her serve as she lost 6 service games which resulted in her losing the opening set of the match. Kenin is set to play an elite opponent in Elina Svitolina so she will need to improve her serve if she wishes to win.

It has been a very strong season for Elina Svitolina as she made the Australian Open quarterfinals earlier in the season. Svitolina’s strong form has continued in recent times as she made the semifinals of the Qatar Open and Dubai Tennis Championships prior to this event. Elina Svitolina is 9-4 for the season which shows that she is in very good form as she enters this match. Svitolina made the third round of the Indian Wells Open last season but considering her recent form, she will have a much high expectation this time around.

This will be the first time that Elina Svitolina and Sofia Kenin will be playing each other at a WTA event.

Sofia Kenin and Elina Svitolina have both been in good form leading up to this tournament. That being said, I am going to pick Svitolina to win this match. Svitolina is ranked 6th in the world and she has been in exceptional form leading up to this fixture. Svitolina is more skilled and more accomplished. I see Elina Svitolina easing into the third round of the tournament.
