Barcelona is welcoming Atletico Madrid in round 31 of Spanish LaLiga.
Barcelona is playing some of the best soccer in Europe and are on the top of LaLiga standings with 21 wins, seven draws, two losses and 70 points. In their last game against Villareal, Barcelona had 68% ball possession, nine shots on goal and high 90% of correct passes but because coach Valverde decided to rest players like Pique, Rakitic, Semedo and Messi, Barcelona didn’t play well and their defense has allowed 4 goals and after being down 4-2 Barcelona managed to tie the game in last 5 minutes with goals from Messi and Suarez. It was a sloppy performance by Umtiti and Langlet in Barcelona’s defense and they just couldn’t keep up with Villareal’s strikers. Messi is Barcelona’s best player with 32 goals and 12 assists in 28 matches followed by Suarez who scored 19 goals. Rafinha, Dembele, Cillessen and Vidal are injured and will not play in this game. Barcelona is playing the top soccer in Spain and have scored 79 goals in 30 games this season which is 26 more than second-best offense in LaLiga. On the defensive end, Barcelona has improved a lot but are still a bit shaky if enough pressure is put on them and they average one conceded goal per game this season. Even though Barcelona hasn’t lost against Villareal, Barca is motivated because the gap in the standings between Barcelona and Atletico Madrid is now only 8 points and with 6 more games to go anything is possible.
Atletico Madrid is the best defensive team in LaLiga and one of the best in Europe with only 19 conceded goals. In their last game against Girona, Atletico Madrid had 48% ball possession but were better in every other aspect of the game with 7 shots on goal and 82% of correct passes and were able to win 2-0 with two goals in last 15 minutes of the match. Griezman is Atletico’s best player and top goal scorer with 13 goals and 7 assists in 30 games followed by Morata and Niguez who both scored 4 goals. Atletico Madrid is second in the standings with 18 wins, 8 draws, 4 losses and 62 points. Coach Simeone was signed back in 2011 and since then Atletico Madrid has been one of the best teams in LaLiga and have played Champions League finals 2 times. Atletico’s game style is focused on defending and are playing with low ball possession which allows them to play fast counter attacks which is Atletico’s strongest weapon. Costa and Lemar are injured while Morata is listed as questionable. After 2 losses last month, Atletico is now on a two-game winning streak with six scored goals and zero conceded goals which has certainly givenAtletico’s defense a big boost before this match against Barcelona who are the top offensive team in Europe.
Barcelona hasn’t lost any of their last 18 home games against Atletico while Atletico conceded at least one goal in their last seven matches against Barcelona and six of last eight games between these teams ended with less than three goals. Both teams are scoring a lot of goals, I’m going to pick something on goals.
