Manchester City will begin their 2019 UEFA Champions League in Ukraine where they will play Shakhtar Donetsk away from home.
Manchester City suffered a shock defeat over the weekend as they lost 3-2 to Norwich City away from home. It was a poor defensive effort by the Sky Blues as they allowed Norwich City 7 shots which led them to concede 3 goals. While the result was disappointing, it should not be taken out of context since Manchester City have been outstanding all season and look very impressive most times they take the pitch. On a positive note, Sergio Aguero continued his supreme form as he scored during the loss to Norwich City.
The Champions League has been the tournament that Manchester City have been desperate to win and considering the depth and quality in the squad, they are one of the favorites to lift the trophy this season.
Looking at Shakhtar Donetsk, the Ukrainian side are top of their domestic league and are looking in decent form. In their previous outing, Shakhtar Donetsk defeated Zorya 4-3. It has been a tremendous season for Shakhtar Donetsk as they currently have a record of 7-0-0. The forwards have been incredible for Shakhtar Donetsk as the team has already scored 23 goals. Despite their domestic form, this is an entirely different challenge for Shakhtar Donetsk as they are playing a significantly stronger team in Manchester City.
Manchester City and Shakhtar Donetsk played each other twice last season in the Champions League. Manchester City won both games. Shakhtar Donetsk didn’t score a single goal in either game against Manchester City. Manchester City scored a combined total of 9 goals in the two games.
Despite the recent form showed by Shakhtar Donetsk, I see them losing at home. Manchester City are a significantly stronger side and the Sky Blues will be desperate to bounce back following their loss to Norwich City. I see Manchester City winning this match with some comfort.
