Fiorentina is welcoming Milan in round 36 of Italian Serie A.
Fiorentina is playing awful soccer and hasn’t won any of their 13 games. During that period Fiorentina has conceded 22 goals and their defense is one of the worst in Serie A. In their last game against Empoli, Fiorentina had a decent match with 53% of ball possession, 11 shots in goal, 7 corner kicks, and 85% of correct passes but was unable to score a goal and Fiorentina lost 1-0. Benassi is Fiorentina’s top goal scorer with 7 goals while Biraghi has 6 assists. Pjaca, Pezzella, and Veretout are injured and will not be playing this game. Fiorentina is in 13th place in the standings with 40 points and is safely outside relegations zone. At the beginning of the season, Fiorentina was one of the best teams in Italy, playing great soccer with a lot of chances and scored goals but Christmas break was not good for Fiorentina and after that everything went downhill. Fiorentina’s home record is 5 wins, 8 draws, and 4 losses, and for a team with ambitions to be European competitions, this record is unacceptable.
Milan was playing great soccer for most of the season but as of late has been in a huge slump and has brought their Champions League ambitions in danger. Milan is holding 5th place in the standings with 59 points and is 3 points behind Atalanta. In their last match against Bologna, Milan was solid with 50% of ball possession, 5 shots on goal, 79% of correct passes and was able to win this game 2-1. Piatek leads Milan with 8 goals in 15 games followed by Suso with 6 goals and 9 assists. Bonaventura, Strinic, Paqueta, and Caldara are injured. Coach Gattuso will have his best players in Calhanoglu, Donnarumma, Kesie, and Piatek at his disposal and the strongest lineup is expected to start the match. Milan has already started preparations for next season and their first signing is Malcolm from Barcelona and Conte is the biggest favorite to become the new head coach. After years of being in the middle of the standings, Milan is finally showing some signs of life and is slowly improving their game. With a few more additions to the team and a coach that is capable of improving Milan’s game style and get them consistent, Milan will finally be ready for the race to the title next season.
The trends here are very mixed and because Milan is playing in slightly better form and is in a desperate need of a win to keep their chances for Champions League alive, I’m going to side with Milan.
