We have some international friendly soccer action on Saturday as France plays their final World Cup tune-up match against the United States from Parc Olympique Lyonnais.
France comes into this match winners of three straight, including a pair of friendly victories last week over Ireland and a 3-1 win over Italy last Friday. Samuel Umtiti gave Les Bleus the lead just 8 minutes in, before Antoine Griezmann doubled the advantage from the penalty spot in the 29th minute. Italy cut into the lead before half time but Ousmane Dembele restored the two goal lead in the 63rd, a lead that France would hold onto the remainder of the match. France owned 57% possession in the win, but were outshot 15-12 with each side registering six shots on goal.
The United States play their final friendly before watching World Cup 2018 from home after failing to qualify following their 5th place finish out of six teams with the top 3 earning a spot in the World Cup and 4th spot getting a play-off. The U.S. looked like they’re just going through the motions after losing a 2-1 friendly with Ireland in their last outing. Bobby Wood gave the Americans the lead just before halftime, but two goals from the Irish would ultimately hand the Americans the loss. The U.S. held on to just 44% possession, being outshot 15-13 by Ireland but did notch 5 shots on target to Ireland’s 3.
These two teams have only met once, with the final result being a 1-0 France victory back in 2011.
As previously stated, this will be France’s last chance to get warmed up before the big tournament next week. The U.S. are simply here for experience, but I’m not sure it’ll matter as I’m fully expecting the French to be at full force for this one, so that’s why I’ll lay the -1.5 goal handicap as I see France winning this one by at least two goals.
