Surprise UEFA Champions League qualifiers Gent will play host to German side Wolfsburg on Wednesday with the Belgians hoping to get to the second leg with a lead. Gent come into this game as underdogs even though they are at home and are rank outsiders in the competition. This is a side though that beat Valencia, Lyon and Zenit in the group stages and most definitely should not be under estimated. Gent will look to top scorer Kums and Depoitre to lead the way. Gent have been excellent in the group stages at home and are unbeaten in the competition at home this season. This is a big ask against an experienced and very strong Wolfsburg squad but there is no doubt that Beligian football is on the rise and it is really no surprise that domestic clubs in Belgium are starting to do well on the European stage.
Wolfsburg though came through a very tough group as winners knocking out Manchester United along the way. While Wolfsburg are definitely dark horses for the competition they have here a real opportunity to make it to the quarter finals and I am sure they will want to take it. With a squad full of experience and quality it's going to be a tough game to call here. Draxler, Schurrle, Dost and Kruse are all match winners on their day and will look to exploit any mistakes that Gent make. There is no doubt that there will be nerves here for Gent as they face into their first Champions League last sixteen game.
Tough one here, I do like Wolfsburg and think they were impressive in their performances in the Group stages especially their home win against Manchester United but this team has struggled for consistance especially away from home where they have lost three of their last four domestically and two of three in the Champions League this season. While Gent have been impressive in their home games and that is what makes this one tough to call. I think though that Wolfsburg are probably going to happy enough with a draw here and I am going to take the draw.
