The Bundesliga returns this weekend following the traditional winter break, so it’s time to place your bets on the upcoming round of fixtures. Let’s take a closer look at three key games from the German top-flight.
Schalke 04 vs. Borussia Monchengladbach – 1/17/20
This is a big matchup to kick off the second half of the 2019/20 Bundesliga campaign. Just five points separate second-place Gladbach and Schalke in fifth, so this is set to be an exciting game. It's fair to say that both these sides have wildly overachieved this season. Schalke narrowly avoided relegation last term, while no expected Gladbach to be in the title race this time around. Neither side scores too many goals, but both team’s defenses have been strong so far. Schalke is the slight favorite at 2.40, while a Gladbach win is at 2.70. However, I think we could see a draw here. Neither manager will want to lose the first game back after the winter break, so both sides will probably be happy to settle for a point.
Pick: The Draw – 3.40
Fortuna Dusseldorf vs. Werder Bremen – 1/18/20
Fortuna host Werder in a battle at the bottom of the table on Saturday. Werder find themselves second from bottom after suffering four straight defeats prior to the winter break. On the other hand, Fortuna are one place above in sixteenth. Neither side has enjoyed a successful season so far. Fortuna have won four of their 17 league games in 2019/20, while Werder have claimed just three victories. What stands out to be here is both teams’ defensive records. Werder have conceded the most goals in the Bundesliga this season, while just two teams have conceded more than Fortuna. For that reason, both teams to score seems like the best bet for this matchup.
Pick: Both Teams to Score – 1.60
RB Leipzig vs. Union Berlin – 1/18/20
RB Leipzig are sitting pretty at the top of the table at the halfway point in the campaign. Julian Nagelsmann’s side have lost just two league games this term and come into this game on the back of a twelve-game unbeaten run in all competitions. By contrast, Union Berlin are eleventh in the standings after failing to win their three games leading up to the winter break. Leipzig have been ruthless this season and have scored three or more goals in their last eight league games. I think RB will keep up this run as the Bundesliga action return this weekend. Also, Timo Werner has been scoring goals for fun this season, so I can’t see him slowing down any time soon.
Pick: RB Leipzig to Win and Over 2.5 Goals – 1.70
