Germany vs France - 9/6/18 UEFA Nations League Pick, Odds, and Prediction

Jason Getz-USA TODAY Sports

Germany will host France in the opening round match of the UEFA Nations League. This is the first time this tournament will take place and both France and Germany will be desperate to start their campaigns with wins.

This tournament will be a great chance for the German national team to redeem themselves following the disastrous group stage exit at the World Cup. The biggest change to the Germany team will be that they will be without Ozil who retired under controversial circumstances following a political argument with the German Football Association. Ozil will likely be replaced by Julian Draxler who should provide a similar creative spark to the forwards. The defenders, Boateng and Hummels were heavily criticized during the World Cup due to their lack of discipline on the pitch. Both players have been picked for the German side and they will hope to do a better job although it will not be easy considering they will be facing a strong attacking side in France.

On the other side of the coin, France enters this match following winning the World Cup. The moral is high among the French players and all the players are in great form for their club side. The big news from the French camp will be the omission of the captain, Hugo Lloris who has been left out following a drink-driving incident in London. The French team should be able to cope since Areola is a very talented goalkeeper as he has shown in his performances with PSG.

The last time these teams played was in 2017 in an international friendly that ended in a draw, This statistic shouldn’t be hugely impactful since the French team is very different from what it was in 2017.

Taking everything into consideration, I am going to pick France to win this match. The French team is playing well and is high on confidence following the World Cup. Germany, on the other hand, are low on confidence and down following the World Cup disaster. Playing at home might not even help Germany since the public have turned on the National team. With these two teams on opposite ends of the spectrum, I am going to back the team that is playing well. I see a French win.
