Inter is hosting Roma in a derby match of round 33 of Italian Serie A.
Inter has been playing hot and cold and consistency was their biggest issues throughout the season. In their last game against Frosinone, Inter was a much better team with 71% ball possession, 6 shots on goal, 89% of correct passes and have won this game 1-3. With this victory, Inter gave themselves some breathing room in front of Milan and are now on the 3rd place in the standings with 60 points, 5 points in front of Milan. Icardi is Inter’s top goal scorer with 10 goals followed by Martinez and Perisic who scored 6 times. Vrsaljko and Brozovic are injured and will not play in this game. Inter is one of the best defensive teams in Serie A and have conceded only 26 goals in 32 games, but lack of consistency in the attacking end is Inter’s biggest problem and coach Spalletti is not doing much to fix that. With the return of Mauro Icardi to the team, Inter is showing signs of improvement on both ends and have scored 7 goals in last 3 matches while conceding only 1 goal and with the way Inter is playing at the moment, their chances of catching up to Napoli in second place are pretty good.
Roma had a great start of the season and was playing some of the best soccer in Italy, but as the Christmas break was closing in, Roma was playing worse. Roma’s biggest problem in their defense and they conceded at least 1 goal in the last 13 matches. In their last game against Udinese, Roma was dominating with 53% ball possession, 4 shots on goal, 82% of correct passes and was able to win this game 1-0. After all the bad things that happened in Roma, they are finally showing some signs of life and it all started with the signing of Roma’s legend and former coach Claudio Ranieri in March. Roma hasn’t lost any of their last 3 matches and have conceded 2 goals and scored 4 goals during that period. With the signing of Ranieri as a head coach, Roma has improved on both ends of the field and are finally able to keep the ball out of their net. El Shaarawy is Roma’s top goal scorer with 9 goals fallowed by Dzeko with 8 goals. Santon, Karsdrop and De Rossi are injured and will not play in this match. Roma is holding 5th place ins the standings with 54 points are is only 1 point behind Milan who is holding last Champions League spot. Roma’s management has already announced that there will be some changes within the team for next season and players like Dzeko, Kolarov will be leaving while De Rossi is going to retire, but with young players like Kluivert, Schik, Pellegrini and Under and great coach Ranieri, Roma’s future is safe.
Trends are mixed between Inter and Roma and both teams are still pretty shaky on the defensive end. I think that Roma needs a win here more than Inter, but Inter has been playing decent soccer as of late, especially at home so instead of giving the edge to either of the teams, I’m going to pick something on goals.
