Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia on Sunday will be the venue for the Gold Cup final between rank outsiders Jamaica and pre-tournament favourites Mexico. Jamaica made it to the final by beating host nation United States by 2-1 in the semi final. Jamaica were excellent in the first half of the game and thoroughly deserved their win. Goals from Barnes and Mattocks were the difference in the end with the Barnes free kick being particularly impressive. Jamaica have won four games in a row after drawing their opening game with Costa Rica and the Reggae Boyz have surprised everyone thus far in the tournament , they are only 90 minutes away from a historic win in the Gold Cup.
Mexico were the pre-tournament favourites for the competition and they opened their tournament with an impressive 6-0 win over Cuba. Mexico have struggled to put together back to back games in the competition and it took extra time for Mexico to get past both Costa Rica in the quarter finals and Panama in the semi finals. In fact Mexico were very lucky to even get to the final. Panama were the better team in their semi final and a last minute penalty brought Mexico level on the night. There is no doubt that Mexico though do have the better individuals and in Vela, Peralta and Guardado they have game winners the question is can they produce it on the night of the final?
Given how the tournament has gone so far I cant help but feel that a storytale ending for Jamaica could happen. Jamaica really produced their best performance in that semi final against the US and a similare performance here should give them a real chance of winning the final. Mexico with their better individuals are deserved favourites but I think the Jamaicans will fancy their chances of getting something here and maybe bringing this one to Extra time. I am taking the draw here.
