Lazio is hosting Atalanta in round 35 of Italian Serie A.
Lazio is playing solid soccer at the moment and is still in the race for Champions League spot. With 55 points, Lazio is holding 8th place in the standings and is only 4 points away from Atalanta who is on 4th place. In their last game against Sampdoria, Lazio hasn’t displayed good soccer and has had 45% of ball possession, 3 shots on goal, 85% of correct passes, but was able to score 2 early goals and win this game 1-2. Ciro Immobile is Lazio’s top goal scorer with 14 goals and is expected to be in the lineup once again. Injury list could be a problem for Lazio because some important players like Lukaku, Berisha, Lulic, Milinkovic-Savic who are all Lazio’s star players are injured and will not be playing. Midfield is Lazio’s strongest part of the field and with all these injuries, it will be hard to contain Atalanta’s offensive power so coach Inzaghi has his work cut out for him. Lazio was everything but consistent this season and with the game they displayed, Lazio does not deserve to qualify for Champions League nor has the quality too much if they get qualified.
Atalanta is playing excellent soccer with lots of passes and shots on goal and more importantly with high ball possession. In their last game against Udinese, Atalanta was absolutely dominant with 62% of ball possession, 8 shots on goal, 9 corner kicks, 82% of correct passes and have won this match 2-0. Duvan Zapata is leading goal scorer for Atalanta with 21 goals and will most likely leave Atalanta at the end of the season and go to one of the top teams in Europe if the management will be satisfied with the offer. Ten days ago, Atlanata has beaten Fiorentina and qualified to Coppa Italia cup finals where they will play against Lazio. With the away record of 9 wins, 3 draws and 5 losses and 37 scored goals and only 16 conceded goals, Atalanta is at the top of Serie A. Atalanta is playing really enjoyable soccer and of all teams competing for last Champions League spot, Atalanta deserves it the most and believe they will get it done. Coach Gasperini was signed in June of 2016., and little by little he created a team that can compete with the top dogs in Italy and if Atalanta’s management will be able to keep their core players like Gomez, Zapata, and Ilicic, Atalanta’s future is pretty bright.
When Lazio and Atalanta meet, trends are mixed and the home team is dominant but because Atalanta is playing in great form and Lazio is struggling with injuries, I will take a stab at Atalanta.
