The Line: M. City +172 / Liverpool +130 / Draw +260 -- Over/Under: 3
Manchester City and Liverpool meet Wednesday in the soccer International Champions Cup at MetLife Stadium.
Manchester City hopes to bounce back after a 0-1 loss to Borussia Dortmund, as Mario Götze decided the game on a penalty kick in the early first half. Despite controlling the ball for 54 percent of the match and getting three shots on goal, Manchester City didn’t have any luck on the offensive side and was shutout for the second time in its last four matches. While still just preseason, Manchester City could use a spark of energy in this match to kind of get things back on track, especially with the way recent history has gone against Liverpool. I would expect the Sky Blues to be far more aggressive offensively and looking to make a statement in this match, as this feels like a contest that should have this clubs attention.
Liverpool is also coming off a loss to Borussia Dortmund, as it lost 1-3 and couldn’t find any offensive success outside of a Virgil van Dijk goal. The good news is that Liverpool did have eight shot attempts and five shots on goal, so the result certainly wasn’t for a lack of effort. The bad news for Liverpool is that it was suspect defensively, allowed guys too much space with the ball and has now allowed two or more goals in three of its last six matches. Again, it’s just preseason, but Liverpool must improve defensively before questions start to pop up. If we’re being honest, there was no reason for Liverpool to be manhandled the way it was in its last match, so this is kind of a bounce back match as well for the Reds.
Liverpool has won the last three meetings against Manchester City, which includes a 2-1 victory last April in the UEFA Champions League. Liverpool is 3-1-1 against Manchester City in the last five meetings, and the only loss was 5-0 last September in the English Premier League. Each of the last four matches have produced at least three goals.
The over is a popular trend between these clubs, as each of the last four matches have produced at least three goals. In a preseason match where both sides were kind of embarrassed in its last match, I expect both teams to push the pace offensively and look to be aggressive out of the gate. Both teams should look for their shots and hope to open the game up a bit.
I like the over in this game.
