Action from the Bundesliga on Friday night as Schalke travel to the CoFace Arena to take on Mainz. Mainz are carrying some string form into this game having won their last two league games and winning four of their last five games played overall. After the winter break Mainz have been terrific defensively conceding just once in three games and winning two of those. Mainz replaced Okazaki in the summer with Muto and he has been somewhat of a success with seven goals this season, in addition young Turkish midfielder Malli has been a revelation and has eight goals to his credit. This is a solid team built around hard work and while they dont score a tonne of goals they are tough to break down and very resiliant. Defensively Mainz are very good and have conceded just one goal a game at home.
Schalke are back in the top four after a rough start to the season they have finally found some form. Star man Huntelaar was back among the goals last weekend his first since December fourth and when Huntelaar is on form Schalke simply perform better. The move of Di Santo during the summer hasnt really panned out as expected with just one goal for the former Chelsea striker since his move from Werder Bremen where he scored thirteen goals last season. Choupo-Moting has also disappointed this season and has struggled for form and goals with only three to his credit this year.Sane has been the best of an average midfield and the young German has scored five goals this term in what has been an impressive year for him personally.
This one is really tight and tough to call. I'm going to take the draw here as I see Mainz being able to handle the defensive duties while maybe being able to trouble a poor Schalke rearguard. Both teams have come into form since the return of the Bundesliga but I dont expect this one to be a barnstormer, just not a terribly amount of goals in either side this year.
