As we approach the end of the transfer window in the English premier League, what has hereto been a dull and mainly uneventful period is about to spring into life, as clubs who have been sabre-rattling finally make their moves.
Manchester United, notably, has been very quiet in this transfer window so far, but we do know that David Moyes, the United manager, has been busy trying to tie up a number of deals. It is a frustrating time for fans, as it appears that the club are sitting on their hands, but the market for the top players today is a far cry from the closed shop of yesteryear.
Ten years ago, the main movers and shakers were clubs like Manchester United, Real Madrid and Barcelona, however, with the advent of rich billionaire owners now pervading football, there are a number of clubs with the financial clout to be able to gazump any deal. With that backdrop to the transfer market in Europe, the balance of power has moved to the players, especially the high value ones.
Manchester United has made bids for Cesc Fabregas at Barcelona and Leighton Baines and Marouane Fellaini at Everton. All have been rejected out of hand by their incumbent clubs, either because they do not want to sell, the player does not want to move, or they both want more cash for the deal.
So far, it has proven to be a frustrating time for David Moyes at the start of his tenure as Manchester United manager, however it looks as though things may start to happen, as he has today made a vastly improved offer for Leighton Baines and Marouane Fellaini of £38m ($60m). Everton will find this hard to turn down for two reasons; firstly, they want to buy a player themselves, but the selling club want more money and other clubs are now showing an interest in the same player! Secondly, both players have told the club that they want to leave.
These are usually the ingredients for a transfer to take place, so we should keep an eye on events at Goodison Park in the next 24 hours.
As it seems almost certain that Gareth Bale will move to Real Madrid in the next 48 hours, the positions of some Real Madrid players looks suddenly uncertain. One of those players is Mezut Ozil, the attacking Midfielder. He is just the type of player being sought by David Moyes for Manchester United and it is my understanding that a bid in the region of £38m ($60m) is being prepared.
One final piece of news concerns the reports in the UK media of an enquiry for David Luiz, the Chelsea centre-back, from Manchester United. It is well documented that Chelsea boss, Jose Mourinho, is not a huge fan of Luiz and sees him a as bit of a loose cannon at the back of the defence, but with the controversy over Wayne Rooney, I feel this move would be highly unlikely.
I expect to see both Baines and Fellaini move to United in the next few days and maybe one more player.
