Bastian Schweinsteiger €15m from Bayern Munich
I've seen alot written about this transfer over the last forty eight hours, many asking whether this is a good or bad transfer, many questioning the fitness of the German captain and a couple (Jamie Carragher) questioning whether Bastian is "past his best". For me this is not a case of whether this is a good or a bad transfer. The real question will be is this a good or a great signing. Bastian Schwiensteiger is the heartbeat of a brilliant Bayern Munich side and captain of the World Cup winners Germany, this is a player in his prime and Manchester United have not had a central midfielder of his quality in his position since Roy Keane. This is a majestic move by Louis Van Gaal and one that is going to attract yet more players. Manchester United are in a rebuilding phase but the signing of Bastian will allow them to be serious Premier League contenders next season and possibly Champions League contenders. There is a need for a striker but this is a brilliant signing.
Morgan Schneiderlein €35 from Southampton
Another fantastic midfield signing for United. Last season Manchester United suffered terribly when Michael Carrick got injured, on Sunday United signed two brilliant players to fill that role and Schneiderlein is only 25, the frenchman has been one of the best central midfielders in the Premier League for the last two years and any bedding in issues that Schweinsteiger might have should be negatted by the fact his midfield partner Schneiderlein will be Premier League ready. United went from having a midfield with serious questions around the middle to having possibly the best midfield five in the league. Di Maria, Schweinsteiger, Blind, Schneiderlein and Mata .. It reads like a fantasy team right now and that is with leaving Depay and Herrerra out!
A whirlwind hit the transfer market at the weekend and suddenly Manchester United have jumped to the front of the challengers for Chelsea's Premier League crown. There is no doubt there are still areas of concern for the Red Devils but with Otamendi looking to force a move from Valencia we could see the problems at the back become less problematic and there are a number of rumours linking United to strikers Cavani and Lewandowski this could be a serious side with huge potential to challenge for honours in a month.
