A pair of powerhouses go head-to-head in MLS action on Saturday as New York Red Bulls host FC Dallas from Red Bull Arena.
New York Red Bulls looking to build a string of positive results, earning points in back-to-back league outings with a 2-1 win over Seattle in their last outing. Daniel Royer gave the Red Bulls the lead 37 minutes in and Bradley Wright-Phillips doubled that advantage just seven minutes after the half. The Sounders cut that deficit in half with 3 minutes to go but it was too little too late as New York picked up all three points. New York out possessed Seattle 57%-43%, with 22 shots (13 on target) to Seattle’s 11 (5 on target). Wright-Phillips leads New York with 10 goals this season, while Alejandro Romero Gamarra leads the Red Bulls in assists with 5 helpers this season.
FC Dallas will be looking to extend their current seven game unbeaten run in league play after posting a fourth straight win with a 2-0 win over Montreal in their last outing. Dallas took the lead just 5 minutes into the game, taking advantage of a Matteo Mancosu miscue that led to an own goal before Mauro Diaz netted the Hoops’ second marker from the penalty spot in the 18th minute, ultimately sealing the victory for Dallas. FC Dallas was out possessed by Montreal just barely, 52%-48%, but the Hoops did outshoot the Impact 16-13 with 7 shots on target to Montreal’s 4. Roland Lamah and Max Urruti are tied for the team lead with 6 goals apiece, with Lamah also leading Dallas with 4 assists this season.
New York has had the majority of the success when these two lock up, with three wins and two draws, with the most recent outing ending in a 2-2 stalemate last September.
The Red Bulls have had the better run of form head-to-head, but it’s hard seeing the Red Bulls take all three points here as FC Dallas have lost just once all season and New York did allow the Sounders to hang around for quite a bit. Dallas is the team in much better league form overall coming into this one and I would definitely take FC Dallas with a double chance on a draw as well as I don’t see New York winning this matchup.
