We have some MLS action on Saturday evening from Talen Energy Stadium as the Philadelphia Union host Atlanta United.
The Philadelphia Union come into this match looking to bounce back after a 4-1 loss to LAFC on the road in their last outing. LAFC jumped out to a 2-0 lead by the 43rd minute before the Union equalized just before halftime with a goal in the 45th minute from Fabrice Picault. LAFC would end up tacking on two more to secure all three points and send the Union back licking their wounds heading into this clash. The Union were out possessed 54%-46% and outshot 11-10 and 8-2 in regards to shots on target. Borek Dockal is Philadelphia’s top scorer and assist man with 5 goals and 3 assists this season.
Atlanta United will also be looking to rebound after letting one slip away in their 3-2 loss to FC Dallas in their most recent outing. Dallas took the lead in the 22nd minute before Josef Martinez equalized for Atlanta in the 41st minute. Martinez gave Atlanta the lead in the 73rd minute with his 2nd goal of the game. United looked to have all three points in the bag until Dallas took the lead with two goals in three minutes which ended up giving Dallas all three points. Atlanta out possessed Dallas 56%-44%, with each side logging 15 shots with 6 on target. Martinez extended his MLS-high goal to 17 while Miguel Almiron leads Atlanta United with 8 assists this season.
Head-to-head, Atlanta has never lost any of the three all-time meetings between these two teams winning two and tying the only meeting at Philadelphia, 2-2 back in 2017.
Philadelphia have won four of their last five home games, so there’s reason to like the Union here. However, even though I got burned on Wednesday, we are still getting a great price on an Atlanta team that is the best in the East, securing 17 of a possible 27 points on the road this season. I’m expecting Martinez to once again be a handful for the opposing defense, and with that I will back Atlanta to claim all three points here.
