Porto was able to snatch a goal in the Swiss capital in the first leg of this Champions League tie. Basel’s performance in the first leg came as a surprise to a lot of the football community as Porto had not faced any sort of complications until then.
However, it is not news to anybody that watches the Champions League, that Basel has been able to surprise a large team in Europe. With Streller becoming a historic football icon in Swiss football, Basel always have the pride that comes with being the biggest club in their country and that always gives the players an extra reason to fight for the result. Nevertheless, visiting Dragao will be an extremely difficult task as Porto is under the same exact pressure. Haven’t been able to win the Primeira Liga last year created an immense burden on Lopetegui when he signed to be Porto manager this season. However his performance as head coach has been stellar.
Porto are in contention for the Portuguese league and are the only Portuguese team left in this competition. Along with the talent provided by the likes of Jackson Martinez, Brahimi, Oliver Torres, and Casemiro it is no surprise to anyone that they are currently in the shape that they are. However, unfortunately Oliver Torres, Martinez and Adrian Lopez will all be sidelined for this clash. Although Jackson and Oliver provide a great attacking threat, it is without question that Porto are more than favourites to advance to the next round. Even though they are missing two key players, Porto’s strength over the years has been the fact that Dragao is probably one of the most daunting fortresses in European football. With fierce fans, and a level of expectancy that matches that of Madrid or Chelsea it is clear to me who the winner of this tie will be.
My prediction for this match is a comfortable Porto win as their morale is high after 5 wins in all competitions along with the fact that they are unbeaten in the Champions League.
