Bayern Munich and Real Madrid meet Wednesday in the soccer UEFA Champions League semifinals at Allianz Arena.
Bayern Munich must be more consistent on the defensive side if it hopes to finish things off with a title, but this is a deep offensive club that pressures opponents constantly and has several guys capable of making something out of nothing. Whether it’s Robert Lewandowski, James Rodriguez, Thomas Muller or Javi Martinez, Bayern Munich has a lot of options it can go to for offense and is never out of matches because of that depth. Bayern has scored two or more goals in seven of its last eight matches in this tournament. Jupp Heynckes is also a coach who has been there done that, as he usually gets the best out of his teams in knockout stages and has a long history of taking his teams deep in tournaments. Heynckes also has a chance to become the oldest coach to win the European Cup at 72 years old.
Real Madrid has also had issues on the defensive end at times and it’s the main reason many would see value in backing another side in this tournament. However, this is an experienced club that can score quickly and often and is led by arguably the best player in the world in Cristiano Ronaldo. Real Madrid has that one player who impacts the game like no other and is capable of willing his team to victory when it looks like his teammates may not have it any particular day. Real Madrid also has history on its side, as this club has won the last two UEFA Champions League crowns and three of the last four. Real Madrid is the perfect combination of experience and world class talent, making the Merengues the favorites to win this thing yet again.
Real Madrid won 4-2 when these clubs met last April, and has been on the winning side in four of the last five meetings. Bayern’s only win over Real Madrid in the last five meetings came in a friendly match back in 2015. Three of the last five matches between these clubs have produced at least three goals.
I’m not trying to pick a side in this matchup, as both teams can light it up offensively and usually do when they meet. You could totally see Bayern stealing a victory on its home field and setting the tone early. Regardless, I expect to see some fireworks and aggressive offense. I like the over in this match.
