Real Sociedad at Real Madrid

In-form Real Madrid welcome an inconsistent Real Sociedad side to the Bernabeu on Thursday with a place in the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey up for grabs. Can Sociedad halt Madrid’s unbeaten run?
Los Blancos entered this season’s Copa del Rey at the Round of 32 and secured a comfortable 3-1 away win at Unionistas to reach the last 16. Real Madrid then thrashed Zaragoza 4-0 in the previous round to book their place in the quarter-finals. The bookies have made Zinedine Zidane’s side the favorites to win the Copa this season and you can’t argue with that given their recent results.
Real Madrid have also been formidable in the league and come into this game on the back of a 1-0 derby win over fierce rivals Atletico. Zidane’s men have only lost one of their 22 league games this term and sit three points clear of second-place Barcelona at the top of the table. Madrid’s success this season is largely down to their outstanding defensive – conceding just 13 league goals so far in 2019/20.
Sociedad humiliated Becerril with an 8-0 victory in their first Copa game of the campaign before claiming another convincing victory against AD Ceuta in the second round. Imanol’s side then beat fellow La Liga club Espanyol 2-0 in the Round of 32 and claimed another top-flight scalp by overcoming Osasuna 3-1 in the previous round. Sociedad have enjoyed an excellent Copa campaign up to this point.
A disappointing 2-1 defeat to relegation strugglers Leganes in their last outing has seen Sociedad slip to eighth in La Liga. Three defeats in their last five league games mean Imanol’s men are now five points off the top four. Sociedad haven’t had any real trouble finding the back of the net this term but their defense has been shaky. Ten teams in the Spanish top-flight have a better defensive record than Sociedad in 2019/20.
Prediction and Pick
The odds for a Real Sociedad win are tempting at 6.50 but I can’t make a case for the away side winning this matchup. Real Madrid are in fine form at the moment and are more than capable of securing the domestic double this season. Los Blancos should be far too strong for Sociedad.
