We have some midweek MLS action from the Rio Tinto Stadium on Wednesday as Real Salt Lake host Sporting Kansas City.
Real Salt Lake enter this match winless in their last three league outings, falling to Columbus Crew in their last outing by a final score of 2-1. RSL found themselves down 2-0 within 23 minutes after conceding a penalty in the 6th minute that Gyasi Zardes converted before Eduardo Sosa doubled the Crew’s advantage. It stayed that way until the 74th when Albert Rusnak pulled a goal back for Salt Lake but it was too late as Columbus took all three points. RSL out possessed the Crew 59%-41%, but were outshot 13-10 with each side having four shots on goal. Rusnak and Corey Baird are tied for the team lead with 4 goals each this season, while Rusnak also leads RSL with 3 assists this season.
Sporting Kansas City on the other hand will look to bounce back after having their seven game unbeaten run halted with a 2-0 loss to Montreal Impact last time out. The match was a scoreless stalemate at halftime before Ignacio Piatti gave the impact the lead 9 minutes after halftime and Alejandro Silva doubled the advantage from the penalty spot in the 70th. Kansas City out possessed Montreal 54%-46% and outshot the Impact 9-8, but it was Montreal who held an edge in shots on goal, 5-3 over KC. Felipe Gutierrez, Daniel Salloi and Johnny Russell are tied for the team lead with 5 goals apiece this season, while Salloi leads the way with 6 assists on the year.
Head-to-head, the home side is unbeaten in the last four league meetings with two wins and two draws, while it is Real Salt Lake who have done well in this fixture, getting points in seven of the last eight league meetings with five wins, two draws and a lone Kansas City win.
Real Salt Lake have had the bulk of the head-to-head success in this matchup, so the home win is tempting. However, we are getting a very good price on Kansas City, who have been in much better form over the last few weeks and who are still at the top of the Western Conference standings. Sure, Real Salt Lake have been good at home, but their recent results leave something to be desired. Kansas City were left frustrated to leave Montreal empty handed, and I think Kansas City does enough to take all three points on the road on Wednesday.
