CD Mirandes at Real Sociedad

Second-tier side Mirandes visit the Anoeta Stadium on Thursday to take on Real Sociedad for the first leg of their Copa del Rey semi-final. Can Mirandes claim a fourth straight La Liga scalp in this competition?
Real Sociedad scored 14 goals across their opening three Copa del Rey games this season without conceding. An 8-0 thrashing of Becerril was following by a 4-0 victory over AD Ceuta before Sociedad saw off La Liga strugglers Espanyol in the Round of 32. Imanol’s side then cruised past Osasuna with a 3-1 win to set up a quarter-final clash with Real Madrid. Remarkably, Sociedad got the better of Los Blancos in a seven-goal thriller – claiming a 4-3 victory at the Bernabeu.
Following victory over Basque rivals Athletic Bilbao last weekend, Sociedad sit sixth in La Liga. However, three defeats in their last five league games have seen Imanol’s side struggle to move up the table in recent weeks. Only three teams in La Liga have scored more goals than Sociedad this term, but seven side have a better defensive record. It’s fair to say that Sociedad have been pretty inconsistent this season.
Mirandes are the only team outside the top flight to reach the semi-finals, so they have to be given huge credit for their efforts. The second-tier side kicked things off by beating Coruxo 5-4 before edging UCAM Murcia 3-2. Mirandes then beat La Liga clubs Celta Vigo and Sevilla to reach the last eight. The Segunda Division club proved they deserve their place in the semi-finals by seeing of Villarreal 4-2 in the previous round.
It’s fair to say that Mirandes’ league form has probably suffered a bit due to their eye-catching cup run this season. After drawing their last five league games on the bounce, Minrandes are stuck in mid-table and desperate for a win. In fact, Mirandes have drawn 12 of their 26 league games this term. This suggests that, while the team may be hard to break down, they struggle to finish their opponents off.
Prediction and Pick
Sociedad are obviously the clear favorites here at 1.30, while the Mirandes win is at 10.00. Plenty of people will play it safe and go for the home win, but I can see the away side snatching a draw. It’s worth remembering that there are two legs to this semi-final tie, so Mirandes will be happy to sit back and take Sociedad back to their place knowing they’re still in the game. Mirandes’ knack for a draw also makes odds of 4.50 very attractive.
