LA Galaxy and San Jose Earthquakes meet Friday in MLS soccer action at StubHub Center.
LA Galaxy enters this match with an overall record of 4-6-1, a 2-3-0 record at home and a 2-3-1 record on the road. LA Galaxy are coming off a much needed road victory over the Montreal Impact, but it didn’t come without a price, as Zlatan Ibrahimovic got a red card for slapping a player across the head. The Swedish legend obviously won’t be available for the Galaxy in this game, giving a struggling team one less playmaker to work with in key situations. However, this is a move that could benefit the LA Galaxy, as it gives Kamara more chances in the open field and allows them to use some of their depth. Either way, the LA Galaxy need to start putting wins together, especially against teams with much less talent. Ola Kamara leads the Galaxy with five goals, Emmanuel Boateng has three assists and Ibrahimovic has 23 shots.
San Jose Earthquakes enters this match with an overall record of 2-6-3, a 1-3-1 record at home and a 1-3-2 record on the road. San Jose Earthquakes have lost four of their last six matches and have had most of their issues on the road this season where they’ve allowed at least one goal in every match and are being outscored by 0.2 overall. San Jose Earthquakes are one of the worst defensive teams in the Western Conference and are coming off a 3-1 home loss to DC United. This season is getting away from San Jose rather quickly and unless it can improve its defensive pressure, there’s little hope for improvement. Danny Hoesen leads San Jose with six goals, Vako has three assists and Magnus Eriksson has 25 shots.
San Jose Earthquakes have won each of the last five meetings against the LA Galaxy, which includes a 3-0 win back in August. The Galaxy have been shutout in two of those five meetings. Each of the last four meetings between these clubs have produced at least three goals.
San Jose is just a bad soccer team right now and that’s not going to change overnight. I’m not convinced the Galaxy are a better team without a playmaker like Ibrahimovic, but his suspension does allow Kamara and other younger players more looks at the net. The Galaxy should have little trouble cruising in this game, finally giving a loss to their in-state rival.
LA Galaxy show there’s still life in their season with back-to-back victories.
