The San Jose Earthquakes and Portland Timbers clash Sunday night at the Avaya Stadium.
The San Jose Earthquakes look to add to their 1-0 season opening victory over the Colorado Rapids. In the victory, the Earthquakes allowed just five shots on target out of 18 shots total and played an overall defensive game that got them two points. The San Jose Earthquakes now just have to figure things out on the offensive end in order to end their playoff drought. Chris Wondolowski leads San Jose with one goal, Alberto Quintero has an assist and Tommy Thompson has one shot. Defensively, David Bingham has come away with five saves on five shots face. The San Jose Earthquakes have come away with points in each of their last six regular season home games.
The Portland Timbers are coming off a nice 2-1 victory over the Columbus Crew SC. In the victory, the Portland Timbers were super aggressive on the offensive end after getting eight of their 20 shot attempts on target despite controlling the ball just 38 percent of the match. Portland will have a lot of success this season if it can get off that many shots in a short amount of time. Fanendo Adi leads Portland with one goal, Diego Valeri has six shots and Dairon Asprilla has six shots. Defensively, Adam Kwarasey has come away with three saves on four shots faced. The Portland Timbers have won their last three regular season road games.
The Portland Timbers have owned the Earthquakes, which includes a 3-0-2 record in the last five meetings. The last match between these two in August resulted in a 0-0 draw. Three of the last five meetings between these two teams has produced three or more goals.
While the Portland Timbers have controlled this series over the years, I find it tough to bet against a San Jose team that looked sharp in its opener and has come away with points in six straight home games.
I’ll take a shot with the Earthquakes.
