Seattle Sounders FC and San Jose Earthquakes meet late Saturday night at CenturyLink Field.
Seattle Sounders FC hope to climb out of an early 3-4-1 hole that has them at the bottom of the Western Conference. The Sounders have won two of their last three matches and are coming off a shutout victory last week over Columbus. Seattle Sounders FC still has issues on the offensive end as they’re averaging just one goal per match and has zero players with double-digit shots on goal. Jordan Morris leads Seattle with three goals, Andreas Ivanschitz has three assists and Clint Dempsey has 27 shots. Defensively, Stefan Frei has come away with 30 saves on 38 shots faced. Seattle Sounders FC have earned points in eight of their last 10 home matches.
The San Jose Earthquakes are in the thick of the Western Conference with a solid 4-3-2 record. The Earthquakes have earned points in five of their last six matches and are getting it done with a defense that’s allowed one or less goals in three of their last four contests. The San Jose Earthquakes have scored at least one goal in all nine matches and have three players with at least 11 shot attempts. Chris Wondolowski leads San Jose with seven goals, Quincy Amarikwa has three assists and Simon Dawkins has 11 shots. Defensively, David Bingham has come away with 27 saves on 38 shots faced. The San Jose Earthquakes have lost six of their last 10 road matches.
San Jose has gotten the better of Seattle recently and is 3-0-2 in the last five matches. The last meeting resulted in a 1-1 draw, and the Sounders last win over the Earthquakes came in May of 2014. Four of the last five meetings between these two clubs produced two or less goals.
This is going to be a great match, especially with the Earthquakes so consistent and competitive on the road. However, the Sounders have found their rhythm recently and know they need to protect home field in order to get back in the playoff race. I like Seattle to take care of business at home.
