Serbia is hosting Portugal in round 5 of Group B Euro Cup Qualifications.
Serbia is a solid team who has lost only 1 of their last 10 matches. Serbia is alongside Portugal and Ukraine the best team in this Group B and is in third place in the standings at the moment with only 4 points after the first 3 games. In their last match against Lithuania, Serbia had 65% of ball possession, 10 shots on goal, 7 corner kicks and 88% of correct passes, Serbia scored 4 goals and has won this match 4-1. This win was crucial for morale in Serbian national team because they got demolished by Ukraine 5-0 just before. Serbia has a good team with players like Tadic, Milinkovic Savic, Kolarov and Luka Jovic who was signed by Real Madrid this summer. Ljubis Tumbakovic was signed as a head coach in July of this year after their former coach got fired after the debacle against Ukraine. This will be the first match for a new coach and it will take some time for players to get used to new ideas and new way of playing, but I think that Serbia has enough quality and experience to end up on 1 of the top two spots that will get them qualified for Euro Cup next year.
Portugal is one of the best teams in Europe led by Cristiano Ronaldo and young superstar Joao Felix. Portugal is playing firm and compact soccer without unnecessary moves or passes forward. Portugal hast lost any of their last 10 matches and has beaten the Netherlands in their last game in UEFA Nations League finals. In that match, Portugal had only 43% of ball possession, but had 7 shots on goal, 10 corner kicks, and was able to score 1 goal which brought them another title and are automatically qualified for Euro Cup, even if they don't end up on one of the first two spots in group. Portugal has scored only 1 goal in their first two games in these qualifications and their best player was Guerreiro who had an assist for that goal. Fernando Santos is Portugal's head coach since 2014. and has won Euro Cup in 2016., and UEFA Nations League 3 months ago. Portugal has been struggling a bit on the offensive end and I'm sure that coach Santos will work on that during this qualification cycle because no matter how far it seems, Euro Cup is just behind the corner and Portugal's morale and chemistry needs to stay high if they wanna compete for another title. The weakest part of Portugal's squad is their defense which is led by Pepe and Fonte who are both over 35 years old and their goalkeeper Rui Patricio who is 31 years old. Even though age means less and less in any sport, both Pepe and Fonte are not getting any faster and this could potentially be the problem for Portugal on Euro Cup. There are some good young defenders like Concelo and Dias who are the future of this team but they need some more time to mature and gain experience.
There is no doubt in my mind that Portugal is a better team here and even though the victory is not crucial for them here, I see them attack right from the start to get their offense going and finally score more than 1 goal in a game.
