Sevilla is hosting Athletic Bilbao in round 38 of Spanish LaLiga.
Sevilla is coming into the last game of the season on the 6th place in the standings with 56 points, 2 points less then Getafe and Valencia. Sevilla still has a shot at getting qualified for Champions League but only if they win in this match. In their last game against Atletico Madrid, Sevilla had a solid game with 52% of ball possession, 5 shots on goal, 7 corner kicks and 86% of correct passes and the game ended in a 1-1 draw. With 60 scored goals this season, Sevilla is one of the top offensive teams in LaLiga but their problem is 47 conceded goals and inconsistent defense which has cost Sevilla higher spot in the standings. Ben Yedder is Sevilla’s top goal scorer with 17 goals followed by Srabia with 12 goals and 13 assists. Sevilla is a great team filled with some good young players like Ben Yedder, Rog, Promes and Silva but Sevilla’s coach, Caparros is not up to the task and wasn’t able to get this good bunch of players together and develop their chemistry. Sevilla isn’t playing in a good form and hasn’t won any of their last 3 games but I’m sure that players will do everything in their power to win this game and to give themselves a chance to play in Champions League.
Athletic Bilbao doesn’t have a chance of qualifying for Champions League, but they need at least 1 point is this game to secure their Europa League spot. Athletic is playing decent soccer at the moment and is coming into this final game of the season in a better form then Sevilla. Athletic was struggling on the defensive end throughout the season and has conceded 43 goals in 37 games and has conceded at least 1 goal in 5 of their last 6 games. In their last game against Celta, Athletic was solid with 51% of ball possession, 4 shots on goal, 83% of correct passes and was able to win this game 3-1 and make a huge step towards Europa League. Williams is Athletic’s best player and a top goal scorer with 13 goals and 4 assists. Athletic Bilbao is a specific team which allows only players from the Spanish region of Basque to play for the club and that is the main reason why Athletic can’t leave a deeper mark in LaLiga or European competitions. There were a few exceptions throughout the history but that wasn’t enough to raise the club on a higher level. Coach Garitano is doing a great job with the team he has at his disposal and will most likely stay on the bench for next season as well.
Sevilla is a better team here in every aspect of the game and despite playing in a worse form, I think that Sevilla gets the job done here and gets the 3 points to keep themselves in a play for Champions League.
