About a month ago this would have been a game between two of the top teams in the Premier League but Southampton have struggled over the last four weeks and have now lost four of their last five leaving Tottenham as the form team. Southampton's struggles are hard to explain as they havent been missing players but just appear to have dropped in some poor performances coming towards the Christmas period. Ronald Koeman will look for Tadic, Pelle and Mane to get things back on track and a win for the Saints at Saint Mary's against a good Tottenham side would be a good start.
Tottenham had gone fourteen games unbeaten before losing last weekend to Newcastle United, that was a strange game in which Tottenham dominated possession and chances but did not convert any of the ones they had in the first half and ended up paying the ultimate price as Newcastle got a much needed win for the embattled Steve McLaren. Tottenham looked a little weary legged last weekend and with Europa League football definitely taking something out of Spurs I think the break from European football over the coming month will be much appreciated at White Hart Lane. Erikson, Lamela and Kane will be key going forward as will Dembele and Ali who are both having career years. Tottenham will fancy their chances here against a struggling Southampton but this one wont be easy.
Such a tough game to call here, I think the bookmakers have got it slightly wrong favouring the home team though, there is no doubt that Southampton's struggles have been more than a month now and cant be called a blip while Tottenham have been in exceptionally strong form except for last weekends loss to Newcastle. For this reason I'm going to take Tottenham to get the win here, in what I'm gonna call my Dog of the Day!
