Euro Cup Qualifications

Spain is hosting Sweden in round 4 of Euro Cup Qualifications.

After a disastrous World Cup in Russia last year, Spain is looking as sharp as ever with 4 -game winning streak and 9 scored goals during that period. In their last game against Faroe Islands, Spain was expectedly dominating with 78% of ball possession, 12 shots on goal, 11 corner kicks, high 92% of ball possession and have won this match 1-4. Spain is a great combination of young players like Asensio, Rodrigo, Oyarzabal and Ruiz, and experienced players like Aspas, Busquets, Navas, Cazorla, Alba and Ramos and two of the top five best goalkeepers in the world at the moment, De Gea and Arrizabalaga. Spain is playing really good soccer with lots of possession and patience and waiting for the right moment to strike. Spain doesn’t have any problems with injuries of suspensions which means that interim coach Moreno will have his best players at his disposal. Last year in Russia, Spain has had a lot of problems, most of which came after their head coach Lepotegui got fired by Spanish soccer association for signing a contract with Real Madrid while still under contract with Spain. After Lepotegui, Fernando Hiero was brought as a coach but his lack of experience has cost Spain dearly and they got knocked out of the World Cup. After Russia, Spanish soccer association decided to go big and they hired former Barcelona coach who won everything and a Spanish legend, Luis Enrique. After he was hired, Enrique did a soft rebuild and thing started to go well for Spain after that, until the moment when Enrique had to leave the camp a night before the game against Malta in March which shook the team to the core. This was Spain’s worst game in a long time but despite that, Spain managed to win for their coach. There is a lot of rumors why Enrique left, but no one knows for sure.

Sweden is playing in great form and has lost only 1 of their last 6 games. In their last game against Malta, Sweden did really good with 64% of ball possession, 14 shots on goal, 11 corner kicks, 6 big chances created and 84% of correct passes and has won this game 3-0. Sweden’s best player is Viktor Claesson who is playing for Krasnodar in Russia Premier League. Janne Andersson has been Sweden’s head coach since June of 2016., and since then Sweden has won 17 matches, lost 12 matches, while 10 ended in a draw. Sweden doesn’t have an overly attractive game style, and most of the times they focus their game in the midfield which is their strongest part of the team. When people hear Sweden, the first name that comes to mind is Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Undoubtedly, he gave a lot to this team and brought a lot of quality but since he retired from the national team after 2016. Euro Cup, Sweden has been playing good soccer and they don’t miss Ibrahimovic at all. Sweden is ranked as 14th national team in FIFA standings which just shows how much they improved in the last two years. In this Euro Cup qualifications, Sweden is in a Group F with Spain, Romania, Malta, Norway, and Faroe Islands and will most likely compete with Spain for the top spot in the group.

Both Spain and Sweden have had easy opponents in their last games a few days ago, so this game will be a real test for them. Latest match between Spain and Sweden was played in 2008 so trends don’t matter here and for that reason, I will rely on quality in a form which is on the Spanish side. Playing at home will only be an added bonus for Spain.

Pick:
Spain to win and over 2.5 goals combined +100

Being from Croatia I was raised with soccer all around me and I loved to watch and play soccer ever since i was little kid, especially after Croatia won third place in 1998 World Cup in France. I watch and follow soccer on a daily basis and to get the oppurtunity to write about it is amazing.
